Art Threads – Marianne Van Silfout Gallery
This year, the Kingston Fibre Artists were asked to mount an exhibition of textile and fibre work representative of our work, in the Marianne Van Silfout Gallery at St Lawrence College, Brockville, Ontario. It is to support and inspire the new textile program offered for students of the college and to show various kinds of needlework and textile work for the students.
Many if not all of us put forth pieces of work from our own collection and October 14th was our opening reception, we all got to see how the show was mounted and it was a wonderful show so I took a few pictures of the gallery.
This is one of my sweaters, a colour block cotton knit with petals and stitching embellishments. The display in the background is of techniques used by many of the artists, stitching, ribbon work, stamping, dyeing and so much more.
Our organizer Heather saw to it that there were refreshments, something we haven’t seen at shows and openings in a long time due to the pandemic…nice to see it coming back.
Here is a shot of the display of stamping, printing using a ‘lino cut’ and breyer with fabric paint to add a pattern to a surface, to fabric.
Here is a long view of part of the Marianne Van Silfout gallery with the pieces beautifully hung and lit. We are aware of how important this is when we hang our Art Threads show at the Tett Centre each Spring.
I couldn’t resist taking a picture of this ‘floating’ piece by Denise Sokolsky…her work always amazes me, both the design of her pieces and the technique.
There are so many pieces in the show, which runs until December 8th, many of which are available for purchase. Some you may have seen at one of our Kingston shows or may be totally new to you and you just want to take it home.
There is a guided tour of the exhibition on Saturday, October 21st from 1 – 3pm.
